Originally extending a much larger area, Ooty Lake has shrunk in size over the years giving way to other structures like the race course.

The main attractions you find surrounding the lake are the boat races and boat pageantry organized as a part of the Summer Festival in Ooty. The lake also has a boat house attached to it which makes boating one of the prime attractions of the lake throughout the year. You also find a lot of shops selling local items like eucalyptus oils and shawls at competitive prices around the lake.

The collector of Coimbatore laid its foundation in 1824, and as of today, it’s a fun and lively place for kids and adults alike. At the boat house in the premises, you can either pay for motor boat rides or hire a paddle boat or rowing boat as per your convenience. And the adjacent amusement park makes sure that kids don’t leave the place heavy-hearted.

Emerald Dam

Botanical Gardens

Spread over an area of 55 acres the Government Botanical Gardens are undoubtedly one of the most sort after tourist attractions in Ooty. No tourist will leave Ooty without a visit to the well organized, well maintained botanical gardens. Maintained by the Horticultural Department of Tamil Nadu, the present day Botanical Gardens is divided into 5 sections.

They are the Lower Garden, which has the fern house which harbors one hundred and twenty seven species of ferns, the Lower Garden, which contains the rose garden, a lot of natural floral carpets and natural ponds, the Italian Garden, laid down by Italian Prisoners of War from the First World War, the Conservatory, which has lots of groups of flowering plants and the Nurseries, which contains a series of glass houses which contains innumerable varieties of exotic plants. The Flower show held as a part of the Summer Festival in Ooty is a must see if you happen to visit Ooty during that time.


Deer Park

How many places do you actually come across where you have a park exclusively for the deer? Well you have one in Ooty. Located right in the town about a kilometer away from the Ooty Lake, Ooty Deer Park is one of the most easily accessible locations in Ooty. After a casual stroll by the lake you can gear up bigger adventures and get the excitement on, by a visit to the deer park. Rose Garden

The chilly weather and adequate monsoon makes it possible for the flowers to have a long flowering season. The Rose Garden is thronged by thousands of tourists year after year. Definitely one of the “must see” places in Ooty, it was initially started to commemorate the centenary Flower Show at the Botanical Gardens. Maintained by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the garden is arranged into five curving terraces covering four hectares. If you are a photography enthusiast, the place is a visual treat with the flowers arranged in different forms and shapes to capture your imagination.

The first look at the garden gives you the impression that a lot of pain and hard work has gone behind the development of the garden, as it has roses bought all the way from different parts of the world. You even find very rare exotic roses and also roses having strange colors like black and green. Kamraj Sagar Dam

Another top “must see” place; in the never ending list of such places in Ooty is Kamraj Sagar dam. Also known as the Sandynallah Reservoir, it is a favorite for the tourists and a wonderful picnic spot. An ideal place to go and chill with your family, it is often frequented by a lot of bird watchers, to get a glimpse of the different species of birds that come to the reservoir for water and also food in the form of fish. There are many different varieties of fish in the reservoir. But mainly found types of fish are the trouts.

The Kamraj Sagar dam is also often visited by nature study groups because of the different variety of flora and fauna that you find here and that too, up close. The place has emerged as one of the favorite picnic spots even for the local people. But please don’t go there if you are planning to spend a quiet evening with your family. This place is one of the most frequented places by the tourists due to the ease of accessibility of the place from Ooty. Nevertheless the place is good to visit especially during the winter season, when the mist settles on the top of the water, with the mountains and forests in the back drop. Mudumalai National Park

The Mudumalai National Park, one of the first forest ranges to be declared as a National Park is located in the Nilgiri district in the border of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The park is located in the Ooty-Mysore route and can be entered from both Ooty and Mysore. The National park was recently declared a Tiger Reserve with a population of about 50 tigers.

Mudumalai National Park is one of the most critical ecological systems in the country, with Bandipur National Park and Nagarhole National Park to the north and the Wayand wildlife sanctuary to the south and between them they house more than 500 species of animals, birds, reptiles and even more species of insects. Needless to say the place is breathtaking and captivating for anyone who appreciates nature.

As you ride through the forests you are bound to see elephants roaming freely in the wilderness and different types of deer for starters. As you move deeper into the jungle, if luck favors you, you will see many endangered species of birds and animals.

High on the list of endangered birds are the vultures. Monkeys like the Grey Langurs are common in the forest. You also find varieties of snakes like the Great Indian Rock Python, Spectacled Cobra, Pit Viper and so on.
