The quiet side of the Nilgiris
Ooty sits at 2,240 metres in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — tea-covered hills, botanical gardens, lakes and Victorian-era lanes, with a famously gentle climate. From Aakash, most of the town is a walk away; everything else, our travel desk can arrange.
From our doorstep
Aakash is about half a kilometre from Ooty railway station — the terminus of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway — near the bus stand, and a 15–20 minute walk from Charring Cross, Ooty’s shopping centre. Ooty Lake and its boathouses are about five minutes by car, and short joyrides on the hill train are easy to plan. For anything further — a taxi for the day, the famed train ride from Mettupalayam, horse riding or mountain cycling — ask our travel desk.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The celebrated metre-gauge line climbs from Mettupalayam through forest, tea gardens and a string of tunnels to Ooty — part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India, worked by rack-and-pinion on its steep lower reaches. The terminus is half a kilometre from Aakash; short joyrides towards Coonoor are easy to arrange, and the full climb from Mettupalayam is the storybook way to arrive.
Ooty Lake
An artificial lake laid out in 1824 under John Sullivan, ringed by eucalyptus and green banks, with the mountain railway running along one shore. Hire a pedal, rowing or motor boat at the boathouse, cycle the perimeter, or browse the stalls selling eucalyptus oil and shawls. The adjacent amusement park keeps children happy.
Thunder World
A dinosaur-themed amusement park at the lake’s edge — rides, arcades and photo corners that reward patient children after a morning of sightseeing, and an easy pairing with the boathouse next door.
Government Botanical Gardens
Fifty-five terraced acres maintained by the Horticultural Department of Tamil Nadu, arranged in five sections — fern house, rose beds, the Italian Garden laid by prisoners of war from the First World War, a conservatory and nurseries of exotic plants. The annual Flower Show, part of Ooty’s Summer Festival, is worth planning around.
Rose Garden
Five curving terraces across four hectares, with roses gathered from around the world — including rare varieties in unusual shades. The cool climate gives Ooty an unusually long flowering season, and the terraces at sunset are quietly spectacular.
Doddabetta Peak
The highest summit in the district, with sweeping views over the forests of Bandipur and the open highlands towards Mysore and the Coimbatore plains. The flat summit makes an easy, relaxed stop; early mornings reward bird-watchers, and both sunrise and sunset are memorable.
Doddabetta Tea Factory
A working factory and its small museum on the climb towards the peak, where you watch Nilgiri leaf become tea — withering, rolling, oxidising and firing — with the scent of fresh leaf everywhere. Tastings follow, and counters of Ooty’s famous homemade chocolate wait dangerously close by. Pairs naturally with Doddabetta for an easy half-day.
Karnataka Siri Horticulture Garden
A terraced hillside garden maintained by the Karnataka horticulture department — flowerbeds, lawns and valley viewpoints, usually far quieter than the gardens in town, and often paired with Doddabetta and the tea factory on the same outing.
Avalanche Lake
A quiet lake away from the traffic, formed by an old landslide and surrounded by magnolias, rhododendrons and waterfall-streaked hills. A favourite of nature lovers and photographers; those keen to stay on can pitch a tent and watch the stars.
Emerald Dam
Set among tea plantations in the upper Nilgiris, Emerald is one of the best spots near Ooty for sunrise and sunset, with ducks and other waterbirds, quiet picnic corners and a small park for children.
Mudumalai National Park
One of India’s first national parks and now a tiger reserve, forming a vast corridor with Bandipur, Nagarhole and Wayanad. Drives through the forest often turn up elephants and several kinds of deer; the fortunate may spot far rarer residents.
Mystique Estate, B Manihatty
High on the Nilgiri plateau near B Manihatty, Mystique Estate is one of the largest working farms in the Nilgiris, growing premium English vegetables at altitude — owned by our group. Walk the vegetable beds, see how hill farming really works, and breathe the cool, quiet air of the upper Nilgiris, well away from the tourist trail.

- Kamraj Sagar DamThe Sandynallah reservoir — a quiet picnic spot ringed by forested hills and loved by bird-watchers; atmospheric under winter mist.
- Kalahatti WaterfallsReached by a short trek from Kalahatti village on the Mysore road, with the Ghats behind and rich birdlife along the way.
Getting to Ooty
- By railThe Nilgiri Mountain Railway climbs from Mettupalayam to Ooty — a slow, celebrated ride and part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India. The terminus is about half a kilometre from Aakash; shorter joyrides from Ooty are easy to plan once you are here.
- By roadRegular buses and taxis connect Ooty with Coimbatore, Mysore and Bengaluru. The bus stand is a short walk from the hotel, and paid pick-up or drop can be arranged.
- By airCoimbatore International Airport is the nearest, roughly three hours from Ooty by road. Our travel desk can arrange a taxi for the climb up.
When to come, and what to pack
- Mar – JunOoty’s high season — warm days, cool nights, and the Summer Festival with its famous Flower Show at the Botanical Gardens. Book early.
- Jul – SepMonsoon mist and the greenest hills of the year. Showers come and go — carry rain protection and enjoy the quiet.
- Oct – FebCrisp, cold and clear, with frost at dawn in deep winter — this is when the room heaters earn their keep.
- All yearDays rarely pass the high twenties and nights can approach zero, so pack warm layers whatever the month. Every room has a geyser with hot and cold water, and heaters are available on request for an additional charge.
